NCIS: Hawai’i – Bread Crumbs

Let’s get this out of the way first, Jane Tennant is a badass.

This is not up for debate.

Second, where the heck was Lucy? Did anyone catch if they bothered to explain her absence? I mean, it was weird to be without her while Tennant was in such danger. And then not even explain it.

I know the actress has other commitments, but come on. I need a logical explanation for why Lucy didn’t drop everything to come running to help. Please and thank you.

Okay, moving on.

Back to Jane Tennant.

Damn, this woman is amazing.

And because I cannot go a second longer without mentioning it, I love that Jane called her team out at the end of the episode.

‘Just doing our jobs.’

Yeah, right.

You didn’t even call Commander Chase or Boom Boom in.

They just showed up because they heard Tennant was in trouble.

Kai was completely on point when he said that Tennant is the most Marine non-Marine. And she held them to what they did.

Because everyone there showed up for her. No one left behind.

Tennant wouldn’t leave them.

And they won’t leave her.

Boom Boom dropped everything to be there, offering help any way he could.

Commander Chase arrived to be another set of hands, no matter what.

Ernie sat with Alex, keeping him calm, and in the loop as best he could.

Kate refused to sit down and rest, even after her smack in the head.

Jesse manned the helm and kept calm, knowing he would get to Tennant no matter what it took.

Kai would never give up. If there was a lead to chase, a place to search.

Tennant would/has shown up for them all in the past. She’s given them guidance and a family. They know, no matter what happens, she will have their back.

And they have hers.

Her touched face in the bullpen when she told them it wasn’t just them doing their job was amazing. Kudos to the actress for making that moment just the right amount of touching.

And kudos to the writers for making this episode about Tennant.

Because we went in search of a fallen NCIS agent who was once a part of Tennant’s team. Her team didn’t question it or ask for connections. The show didn’t even bother to offer an explanation about their relationship and I kinda loved it.

No, wait. That’s not true.

I did love it.

This episode wasn’t about the missing agent or her relationship to them.

It was about Tennant.

This episode drove home what has been building for almost two complete seasons now.

This show is about family.

Led by an amazing woman.

Tennant has never been able to sit on the sidelines. She’s always there to stand up for those who cannot. Help those is need. It is her calling. It has been since her understanding of right and wrong cemented.

“Someone has to do something.”

Her younger self said it. Her older self said it.

Tennant will never leave anyone behind if she can help it. She will fight. She will get up. She will carry on. No matter the odds. No matter who stands against her.

When she was stuck in that pit, the other agent spiraled.

He wondered when people would come looking or that they would never find them in that hole.

It didn’t matter to Tennant.

Her people were looking. They would find her sooner or later. She knew they would come and not stop looking under every rock, in every hole, until they found her.

But that didn’t matter either.

Because Tennant can save herself.

She’s a big girl. And while it’s nice to know that her team has her back. That they will fight through everything to find her and bring her home. That while she is lost, her children will be cared for. Her office will carry on. She trusts them to keep the wheels spinning.

While she knows this, she also knows what she’s capable of.

She was a CIA agent.

She worked alone. A lot.

She can save her own damn self.

And she damn well did.

Gotta love it.

And while she clawed her way out of that hole, her team – her family were pursing the man who put her there relentlessly.

Honestly, I would not want to be that guy.

Escape was never going to happen.

He was on an island, surrounded by law enforcement, being hunted by people who would stop at nothing to bring him to justice.

Not even a knock-out stopped Kate from continuing on.

Kai didn’t even bother tying her to a tree. Honestly, I think he knew Kate would just free herself and come with him anyway.

Kai knew the type of loyalty Tennant inspires.

I did love his little snarky comment about getting her checked out now. And Kate’s smile was cute.

I really love the blossoming relationship there. They bicker and tease and chat like brother and sister. I really hope the show plays into it more.

Because this episode focused so heavily on the type of loyalty Tennant inspires, it was odd Lucy was not mentioned or featured in such an episode. Given that she would be right there with them during such stressful situation. It was odd and felt out of place for the character.

Again, I know the actress has prior commitments. But given this shows wonderful writing, it was a shame they didn’t toss in a solid explanation for her absence.

Lastly, I adored, loved, and seriously enjoyed the moment when Tennant gets off the helicopter to face down the prisoner.

She looked worse for wear, but she held her head high. She knew she had this moron dead to rights and was no longer in a good mood.

He had a chance, to deal with Tennant when she was in a good mood.

But he threw it away.

Now, her team has found everything.

Her family, ensured a grieving family would have answers. His murderer would see justice done.

And, it was extremely entertaining to watch Kai and Kate protectively standing behind/beside her while she confronted this moron.

They were so adorable.

Truly.

I don’t know why it tickled me just right. Maybe because they love her so much.

It wasn’t something we’ve just been told. They have waxed poetry on their loyalty to Tennant. It’s developed, slowly over almost two full seasons. We’ve seen her go to the mat for both of them. For all of them. We know she cares for her people, and she makes it a two-way street.

We weren’t just told it.

We’ve gotten to see it.

We’ve seen the bonds grow and become stronger. We’ve seen this family fight together and for each other. Protect each other. Give advice. We’ve seen them at their best and worst. They have too.

This episode was a perfect payoff.

You felt their worry. Their fear.

Their relief at the end when she told them to go home.

Their joy at knowing that Tennant knows, they would do anything for her. They would have her back.

No questions.

Because she does the right thing, simply because it’s the right thing.

I love this damn show.

I’m so happy there is another season coming and I can’t wait to see what happens during the rest of this one!
