Flash – The Mask of the Red Death

Okay, so real quick! I actually watched the last three episodes today, so this is going to be a review of all of them together.

Whew!

A lot has happened.

Including learning that Ryan Wilder was the Red Death as she dubbed herself. She’s from a whole other universe and is a villain.

Wow. How original.

Honestly, this is the last season of Flash and I expected epicness, a love letter to the last nine years. Characters old and new rejoicing in the wonder of being superheroes and having defeated supervillains all these years.

Instead, we have an evil Batwoman…?

Wha?

Caitlin is gone.

Cisco hasn’t been mentioned.

Joe wants to leave and is leaving after this episode with his daughter in tow because this is all too much?

Wha?

Joe feels he stole his children’s childhoods because he was a cop? Or because he wasn’t there for his son because his mother wouldn’t let him?

I don’t know. Maybe I’m missing something from the seasons I have elected not to watch but it didn’t sit right with me.

Joe did his best for his children. All of them.

Also, why did he not add Barry to the list? He considers him a son, doesn’t he? Or did I miss a memo?

They had love and loving parent who was there day in and day out. He loved them with everything he had and gave them all the love and respect and advice he could to help them through life.

Yes, he stumbled. But he loved those kids.

It was just an odd reasoning. And I suppose I do understand him being tired of near-death experiences but it happens no matter where you are.

See – Superman and Lois. They moved their family to Smallville and found more issues than they expected in a small town.

Anyway, I’m super excited that Iris is pregnant! I felt super robbed that we were never going to see her be pregnant on screen! Now we do! Whoo!

Also, she is totally allowed to still have a life after becoming a mom. I loved that Barry promised they would find a way because she deserves to have her life however she wishes it.

The whole rogues thing was beyond dull to me.

After all these years Barry is still learning and repeating the lessons I thought he already learned. I don’t get it! How many times do we have to hit him on the head with things before he gets it?

Oh, and as for Grodd. I totally would’ve squashed him.

Sorry Barry.

But seriously, your reason to not get squashed after ignoring him for three years and leaving him in the cold is because you need something from him?

Like, if that was a real life scenario you would have hung up the phone. Just picture it!

A friend who ditched you, years ago. Shows up on your doorstep after leaving you to do with your issues and you’re like why should I help you? And they say because I need you.

Would you help them? No.

You weren’t here for me, get lost.

Jeez. It was such a stupid line.

Not to mention we’ve been here before over and over on this show. Flash just keeps recycling their storylines. How many times have we tried to talk Grodd down? I’m over it. Either he’s good or not. Let’s move on.

Chillblaine! Whose name I’ve finally learned.

I don’t know what to make of this guy sometimes. On the one hand, they clearly don’t help him by trying to make him the bad guy for wanting to do anything to save Frost. On the other hand, Barry has done the same thing for Iris on many occasions and we still root for him.

So, I decided that Chillblaine isn’t that bad.

I was actually really excited when he chose Team Flash and realized they weren’t denying him to hurt him.

Khinoe! Another name I learned.

She seems like a mix of Frost and Cailtin. The freezing healing powers when she kissed Chillblaine seemed to be of Frost. But knowing Iris was pregnant seemed reminiscent of Cailtin’s doctor half.

I don’t know. I’m just guessing. She is an odd one for sure.

I’m happy Allegra and Chuck worked their awkwardness out and kissed happily. Maybe they should have chosen a more private location for the chat, but hey. Life is short, especially in these shows. Sometimes, you do what you gotta do.

I would also love to give a hand to Javicia Leslie for her brilliant and stunning portrayal of the Red Death!

She looked like she was having a ball playing this unhinged villain who thinks they’re doing the right thing. She was honestly scary!

I actually felt myself backing away from the screen when she was going all out with those wide eyes looking chaotic and nuts. Her head movements, body language, it was all perfect!

So congrats to her for giving me shivers down my spine!

The tidbit about what’s happening in Gotham and National City with the other shows that didn’t get a chance to end properly was sweet. I still wish they could wrap on their own terms but hey – thanks for trying Flash.

Also, going into these last two episodes I kept shouting and wondering if they were going to tell us what actually happened to the real Ryan Wilder.

I was like, they canceled her show! You can’t leave it hanging!

I was so relieved when I saw the Batarang. I let out a sigh. Okay, she’s here and the Red Death is doomed.

You want to know what else? I was actually enjoying how well the other rogues were working together. The ones working for the Red Death.

No fighting. Actual teammate style. They were kind of adorable with the sign language. For some reason, it just tickled me.

They weren’t acting like children, but a team with a common goal. And it showed in how easily they took out Team Flash and his rogues over and over. Even in the end, without Batwoman they got KO’d again.

Well, now.

With the Red Death defeated, Iris pregnant, and Joe leaving – what’s next?

I haven’t looked at spoilers and I don’t intend to. I just want to go along for the ride for the rest of the season and see what happens!

As always, thanks for reading!
