NCIS: Hawai’i – Rising Sun

Okay, I’ll admit it!

You don’t have to twist my arm or anything.

I’m here for the gays.

Yes, I admit it.

I started watching NCIS: Hawai’i for Lucy and Kate’s relationship because I kept seeing it on Tumblr and I couldn’t hold out anymore so I tuned in.

I’ve seen other NCIS shows and I’ve never been a weekly watcher.

For me, I thought I’d be into this show to watch for Lucy and Kate and put up with everything else like I do on Station 19 – I mean – other TV shows that need not be mentioned.

Guess what?

I actually LOVE this show.

Every character is amazing and even though Lucy is absent and I miss her terribly – this show is still so good and Rising Sun proved it to me.

Without Lucy, the show has struggled to find footing again.

While watching the episode I realized Lucy is the heart of the show while Tennant is the soul. She keeps the family together and is very much it’s head.

This last episode shined because it found a way to be light-hearted without Lucy, the characters jived together, and came together as the found family they are.

And they added a new member to their ohana, officially.

I adore Kate Whistler. I really do.

I adore Lucy too, but she was not focused on in this episode.

In this episode, Kate got what she wanted in the first season. People to have a drink with at the end of the day after having each other’s backs at work.

Kate has struggled with being a loner, making her relationship with Lucy work, and who knows what else in her backstory we have to see. She wants a family and friends but part of her doesn’t believe she’ll find it.

Yet she has.

The moment when Jane Tennant called her over for a drink and made her officially part of the ohana was absolutely perfect. She left nothing uncertain, she didn’t take the out Kate offered. She simply told her the truth.

You are my family and I want you to know that.

This is exactly what I meant when I said Tennant is clearly the head of the family.

She knows it’s up to her to make sure Kate knows, she’s one of them. She’s her family. She’s Jesse’s, and Kai’s. She’s part of their ohana.

And as such, she’ll go to mat with boss or 50 cal machine guns because that’s what she does for the people in her family.

It was a truly perfect moment.

I find a lot of shows have moments where characters do say that a former outsider is one of them or has become part of the team. See Root on Person of Interest. They speak through actions and back it up with some words too.

There is nothing wrong with that, let me be clear. I love those story lines where one character is like, ‘of course, you’re family. You think I’d get shot at for someone I don’t like?’ Usually delivered in the middle or right after a crisis.

I love those, they’re great! I will always accept those moments.

However, Jane’s approach here was perfect too.

She took the time to call Kate over for a drink after hours. She didn’t say anything in a professional setting because she wanted Kate to know their friendship is personal, not work related or motivated. She understood Kate.

She knew – for Kate – a quiet controlled setting, she chooses to tell her that she’s family and she will always be there.

Because it left no room for Kate to doubt it and I think that was simply perfect.

Now, as I said before, I’m here for the gays.

But I have stayed because these characters are soooo good together.

Jesse knowing Kate would calm down if he talked about Lucy was adorable, because he cared to try.

Pike is absolutely ridiculous all the time and I love that. Although, I agree he should keep his bulletproof vest on. I literally said during the episode that he should stop hanging out with NCIS since this is the third time he’s been beaten up around them.

Ernie is wonderful. Simply perfect. He’s this older tech dude who has seen it all and is a nerd and a geek who just wants to geek out. Love it.

Also, are they gonna go for a Ernie and Commander Chase romance? Cause I’m here for it.

Jane is wonderful leader and someone I would love to work for or with. It is no wonder Jesse is so ready to run into the line of fire for her all the time. Honestly, if Kate didn’t back up Tennant, I’m pretty sure he was about to do something crazy so she wouldn’t crazy alone.

Tell me I’m wrong.

Kai is – oh man – he’s awesome! He doesn’t act like a seal or marine should. He exercises caution. I’ve never seen those types on TV worry about things like their own safety or life. I watched 10 seasons of Steve from Hawaii 5-0 fling himself into all kinds of dangerous situations while Danny complained from the sidelines. Kai is a refreshing change of pace.

His moments with his father as he tries to balance his past with present were great. There was a lot of heart from both actors as they fielded a difficult situation.

Also, AJ can kiss my ***.

Right, anyway…

The moment with his father trying to help by reaching out and getting everyone together was perfect. He’s old school Hawaiian. He has all the connections. It was perfect.

All in all, a solid episode. Can’t wait for more!

And for Lucy to return!

SPOILER – I saw BTS photo of the Kacy bedroom! Send me all the speculations please!
