Happy Pride Month everyone!
So, first up on the list for my favorite couples, is Nyssara!
Nyssa Al Ghul and Sara Lance! These two graced my screens together for the first time in season two of Arrow, ‘Heir to the Demon.’
From the moment Nyssa arrived in all her glory in her very first scene at the airport, I loved her character. Her introduction had so many layers for her character and Katrina Law did such an amazing job with Nyssa giving her amazing depth.
Not to mention Katrina Law has managed to deliver some swoon worthy lines that never felt over the top in her hands.
“I took Sara into my heart and loved her with all of my soul.”
“Sara was everything I held dear in this life.”
Nyssa was easily a character who the audience could have hated. She did after all try to kill Sara’s family. However, that action came off as someone who was raised to use violence and threats to get what she wants. That was acting out irrationally because she was hurt, because she believed the woman she loved would kill herself rather then return to their relationship.
That’s exactly what Nyssa wanted. Sara to come back to her, to come home. A very real emotion people can understand that Katrina portrayed excellently.
On the other side of things the struggle between Sara wanting to be with Nyssa versus no longer wanting to be an assassin.
Unfortunately, this relationship was made far more tragic then I believe to be needed. Arrow missed out on a prime opportunity to make a really special relationship here.
Sara and Nyssa were clearly involved with one another pretty seriously before Sara departed Nanda Parbat. So much so, Nyssa referred to it as coming home for Sara. It’s not often we get to see serious, loyal, and dedicated love stories on TV without breaking them up constantly.
When Sara and Nyssa returned to their relationship at the end of season two it would have been a wonderful change of pace to see them working through a relationship together.
What would it be like for Sara to return to being an assassin? Is it too much for her? Is Nyssa worried Sara will end up resenting her? Believing she was forced back to this life again? Forced into a relationship with Nyssa?
Questions I would have liked answered as well during season three. How did they fall in love? Was it slowly? Nyssa was her teacher, did it happen while Sara was still a student? How long were they together?
Alas, Arrow missed so many chances to take this interesting relationship into so many places that it never would have bored me. Characters actually making a relationship work can be super fun.
Moving on…
As for what I have seen and what has been shown even through comics.
They clearly cared for each other very deeply. From Sara desiring to save Nyssa from her imprisonment in Nanda Parbat. To Nyssa doing anything to see justice done for Sara’s untimely death. (Yet another thing I’ll always be angry/annoyed about.)
Their relationship seemed built on mutual trust, respect, and understanding. I think there were a few hiccups considering how Nyssa was raised and how Sara was raised. But at the end of the day these woman loved each other.
They’d do anything for each other. Which is why they make my list of favorites over Sara and Ava.
I do concur Sara and Ava are rather cute together I’ll always be partial to Nyssa Al Ghul. Every time the woman is on screen she always seems to get the short end of the stick. Losing Sara, losing Laurel, losing her title, and her Father’s betrayal. The poor woman needs something good in her life.
I am always going to wish she could have Sara.
The reason I have placed them last on my list comes from varying reasons. One of which is because as of yet, they haven’t had a happy ending together. Another being the ship has basically sailed. They are no longer a canon couple. But also most important for me most of their relationship has been made up in my head.
Aside from ‘Heir to the Demon’ they have practically no scenes together. It makes it harder to discern the type of couple they are. Therefore, they get to the bottom of the list unlike other couples yet to be mentioned who have more development I don’t have to make up myself.
So, that’s the first couple up on the list! Share your thoughts on NYSSARA and whether you ship them or Avalance!
Read on and spread the love!
