Quick question: Does anyone care about whatever the Newbies are up to?

Scratch that. I have several questions actually.

Does anyone care about what the Newbies are up to? Is anyone invested in whatever Vigilante is up to? Does anyone believe these three actually make a good team? Or a good addition to the show? Does anyone really care what happened to Cayden James’ son beside Cayden James? And truthfully, is Cayden James and his cohorts actually frightening villains?

Not me. Sorry.

It’s been a long time since I was so bored watching people fumble around on screen like they matter. So boring I wished I could just fast forward through their scenes.

I’m sorry to anyone who likes these characters for bashing on them but they’ve never felt like a cohesive part of the show to me. And right now with their petulant teenager act it’s making it even harder to root for them.

That little moment at the end of the most awkward team-up ever said it all to me. Oliver offers a ‘good job’ and nothing else only to be snipped at by Rene saying it changes nothing. Oliver wasn’t asking for anything or offering anything. He simply complimented them. Once again it was taken out of context and twisted into something horrible by these three fools.

Is it too much to hope Vigilante is playing them just so they understand what it’s like to trust the wrong people? Like each other?

Sorry, I have a lot of hostile feelings towards these three and the last few episodes have not helped their case. Not to mention I’ve found out a bit more about what happened in season five which also does not help their case.

Anyway, moving on to the heart of the show OTA. Will Diggle ever tell Oliver he wants to be Green Arrow again? What does it mean for Oliver going forward now that his son approves of his choice to be a superhero? What does that mean for Diggle? What’s next for new step-mom Felicity Smoak?

I enjoyed the big reveal about Oliver’s lie to his son not becoming this huge deal. For many seasons on this show lies have been the fastest way to break or setback relationships. For one of the first times since the show started they picked a different route in actually helping the relationship move forward.

The lie about Green Arrow actually brought father and son closer because William accepted being Green Arrow is part of who he is. And he’s really good at it. As Felicity pointed out Oliver can’t promise he’ll always come home, but he can promise he’ll do everything in his power to try. He’s been at this for almost 11 years (island and superhero time combined) and is still alive, he must be doing something right.

I loved that both Oliver and Felicity were struggling with how to be parents. I loved Oliver wanting to help with the homework but being sidelined for Felicity. It was a cute and important moment too. They’re a family. The three of them. William accepted a new person into his life and Oliver accepted sometimes he’s going to get passed over for Felicity’s help.

Both Felicity and Oliver were struggling with how to help William through this. Oliver wanting to give him space. Felicity wanting to talk to him but not knowing what to say. These are real parenting problems. When do you talk? When do you listen? When do you give space? I like the realism here.

Felicity’s speech was perfect. She loves Oliver too. She was a perfect choice to talk to William because she knows exactly what it’s like to worry about him. But she also knows he can hold his own out there and will fight to come home.

One of the things I noted during my last re-watch of Arrow was Oliver in seasons one through three is beaten more times then in the following seasons. Something I noted changed after a conversation with Felicity is season three. She told him to stop fighting to die and fight to live, maybe with that change in his approach might finally set him apart. Afterward, he went on to beat the Head of the Demon.

From then on Oliver has much more easily dispatched opponents, like handedly beating Merlyn in season four. There wasn’t even a question in that rooftop fight Oliver would win. His fighting style improved when he stopped believing this would end in his death, instead he focused on what he had to live for.

Now, with William, he has even more to fight for.

I loved the ending with the three of them talking it out together. I have a hard time believing Robert Queen would call family meetings to resolve anything between them. The Queen family has been tore apart again and again by secret after secret. That seemed weird and out of place but it feels perfect for Oliver to do it.

After everything they’ve been through, all the secrets, and lies it feels right Oliver and Felicity would take a hard stance against them with William. The little bit with William not worrying so much about not being alone anymore if something should happen to Oliver was nice. He acknowledged Felicity’s role in his life. It would’ve been nice if he could have tossed in something about Thea too but it makes sense he didn’t too.

Thea has been in a coma for the last few months and he’s just getting to know her. In theory he would know Felicity better since he’s been around her more often. She is also his step-mother and living with him so it does make sense she would be his guardian if Oliver passes away.

I hope Diggle expresses his desire to be Green Arrow again to Oliver.

It would also be nice to get less screen time from my least favorite characters but I doubt I’ll get that lucky. Sigh.
